The holidays are crazy busy for all sorts of different reasons. Not only are you frantic to get your personal life squared away—shopping, making travel plans, sending holiday cards—but it’s also a very busy time for many, many industries. Combine that with taking time off for holiday, and meeting end-of-year quotas, this can be a very busy and stressful time.

Getting Rid of Your Inner Grinch

This stress can sometimes cause your inner Grinch to come out. You may find yourself saying things like, “I don’t want to do this, I don’t like Christmas, I don’t want to see people. There’s too much pressure. It’s too much for me!” So, what do you do when you feel your inner Grinch rearing its green head?

Live the Holidays by Your Terms

Often, the pressure we feel during the holidays is at least partially our own fault. We create this idea that ourwhat makes christmas for you holidays are supposed to be perfect and beautiful—we’re supposed to see every one of our friends, and have the perfect gift for each and every person. We think we need to be at every party, every festival, every Christmas tree lighting. Frankly, it’s unrealistic, and it makes us unhappy.

The only way you’re going to be happy during the holidays, and the rest of the year, is to focus on what’s important to you. I know that won’t remove the stress completely, but if you know that your stress is leading to something that is important to you, you know that it’s worth it, and you can bear it.

The cause of your winter blues

If you’re feeling like you can’t deal with the winter blues, and your inner Grinch is catching up to you, take some time to sort out what is causing these feelings. Sometimes your inner Grinch actually makes some good points. Maybe you really are under too much stress, and you’re just trying too hard.

It’s important to remember what the holidays are meant to be about: being joyful and grateful for who and what you have in your life; sharing with the people you love, and doing good deeds for others.

True: Better to Give than Receive

My trick to kick the winter blues, is to go out of my way to do something for someone who needs help. There are countless ways, especially around the holidays, that you can get involved in your community and give back to those in need. Consider donating food, clothes, or children’s toys for those who need them. Offer to help an elderly friend or neighbor set up their decorations. Hold the door for a stranger. Even small acts, when done repeatedly and with an open heart, can change your life.

Unplug, Unwind, Succeed

So, don’t focus on the perfect Christmas, or the perfect holiday break. Focus on what is important for you and for the people who matter to you most. Remember that there is no perfect. Take the time to relax, unwind, and recharge. Sometimes, the most effective thing you can do with your time, is to disconnect, and get ready to take on another year.
