For most of us, there just isn’t enough hours in a day. Tasks get pushed into tomorrow and before you know it you’re starting the weekend with a huge ‘to do’ list. How do you make sure that you prioritise the right tasks?
Whatever your circumstances, chances are you simply feel as though there isn’t enough time to do everything you want to do. And with that you either feel guilty, like a failure, or both. I can help.
A Tool to Help you Prioritise
I coach many people on how to manage their time as very often people will come to me feeling completely overwhelmed, saying that they have ‘no time’.
Believe it or not, how we spend our time is largely in our control. Granted if you are working 9 to 5 in a company, you may have to spend certain hours in the office but you can still organise your time at work efficiently – more on that in another blog.
Okay this is where you are allowed to relax. No TV, no phone, no laptop, no kids. I mean it! Take out a sheet of paper and do the following:
- Draw a circle and in that inner circle right down who the most important people are in your life.
- Then draw another circle outside the first circle and do the same.
- And then do this for a third time.
The page shouldn’t be crammed full of names and projects – but your inner circle may just have a few of the most important people to you in there.
The point is we can spend our time running after people and activities that really are not that important to us – at our core.
What did you observe from this exercise?
Ask yourself the following:
- What I am a sacrificing by focusing on this person or activity?
- What is it costing me?
- What do I get out of it – be really honest?
- And by doing this – what am I avoiding?
Very often we use the excuse of ‘I’m too busy’ or ‘They always want me to’ to avoid doing other things – maybe even prioritising and planning so it’s no wonder we bounce from one thing to another.
Being busy can be a very handy excuse.
