No matter what stage of your life and career you’re at, I’m sure there is plenty for you to be thankful for. Unfortunately, we often take these things for granted and focus, instead, on the negative things in our lives and the challenges we have to face. Shifting your mindset towards appreciation of the good things in life has a number of benefits to us and those around us. Let’s look at a few of those key benefits.

Boost your self-esteem

It’s easy to focus on our own weaknesses and the things we are lacking, but doing this regularly creates an unhealthy and toxic relationship with ourselves. Appreciating the things you’re good at and all the good things you’ve done in your life helps you develop a kinder, healthier attitude towards yourself, helping you to feel good about yourself.

Strengthen relationships

Whether it’s with your friends and family members or your work colleagues, expressing and showing your appreciation of the people in your life can help to strengthen the bond between you. Couples who show appreciation of each other have been found to have more successful and long-lasting relationships, while appreciation in the workplace can lead to happier and more productive employees.

Sleep better at night

If you’re appreciative of what you have rather than worrying about or envying what you don’t have, then your mind will be more at peace. This helps you to fall asleep more easily at night rather than lying awake focusing on negative thoughts.

Be happy

The majority of the benefits caused by appreciation all add to this – happiness. By appreciating the little things in life, the people around you, and the strengths and attributes that you possess, we start to see things more positively rather than dwelling on negative things that lower our mood. This has lots of knock-on effects on our physical and psychological health.

So, whether it’s telling a colleague that you appreciated their efforts on the latest project, or privately writing down what you’re thankful for at the end of each day, practising appreciation can make us happier and healthier.
